Corey Naylor – Hold My Mop

They have the ship, the hostages and the clock. He has the keys to everything they ignored.

The pirates have the bridge, the hostages and a countdown. Captain Sekt is in a cargo bay wearing a gold band that marks her as valuable and, so far, has not noticed how difficult she intends to be. Deputy Speaker Halvek is explaining his rank to a man who does not care about it. And down in the service spine, the ship’s least important employee is still on shift.

Corey Naylor cannot retake a starship. He can, however, reroute a laundry chute, file a catering permission, weaponise a custody form, and remember exactly which decorative fountain was wrongly patched into the fire-suppression system. With Lieutenant Vey, Chief Steward Pell, a battle-damaged cleaning drone called Bucket and a sanitation organism named Gloop, he sets about making the Radiant Accord extremely inconvenient to steal.

The concluding part of the Corey Naylor saga: one story told in two halves, about the invisible work that keeps everything running, and what happens when the people nobody counted turn out to be holding the place together.

“Who gave you access to their routes? — I work here.”
